When Jon Favreau bowed out of the “Iron Man” franchise in December, the filmmaker made clear he remained on good terms with Marvel execs and that he’d stay within the studio family as an executive producer on the upcoming superhero all-star flick, “The Avengers.”

But with Favreau busy with directorial duties on the alien-Western hybrid “Cowboys & Aliens” and prep work on “Magic Kingdom,” his Disney World-set family picture, it remained to be seen how involved he’d be with “Avengers,” which kicked off filming in April. Now, as the “Avengers” teaser trailer has leaked (after appearing in the post-credits sequence of “Captain America”) and fans have gotten their first look at what director Joss Whedon has done with that collection of superheroes, we’re also getting an idea of Favreau’s role in the action.

“My involvement is just to be as supportive as I can be. Most of the cast is people that came onboard to work with me on the ‘Iron Man’ film, so I feel a sense of responsibility to them. I really hope it works out,” Favreau told MTV News while promoting “Cowboys & Aliens.” “I’m not in the trenches with them and I’m not making creative decisions on their behalf, but I’m completely available and of service.”

That’s a far cry from how fans might have thought things would play out back in 2008, when Favreau said he’d be open to directing “Avengers.” But in October 2009, MTV News broke the news he wouldn’t be helming the film, and after “Iron Man 2″ hit theaters last year, he ceded directorial duties on that franchise to Shane Black. These days, Favreau said Whedon is a far better choice to direct “Avengers” than he ever would be.

“They have Joss Whedon, who’s a very talented guy and is really good with ensembles and really understands the superhero genre better than I do,” Favreau explained. “I understand ‘Iron Man’ very, very well, especially the ‘Iron Man’ movie and the cast and the characters all built to one thing. But there are other characters that I don’t know. Each filmmaker had a different approach to how they went about it — ‘Captain America’ is coming out, ‘Thor.’ The combining of all those things is going to be its own thing in and of itself that Joss has embraced and wrote the script. I expect big things.”

With the swift decisiveness of a magic wand, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2″ vanquished several box-office records over the weekend. The final and best-reviewed entry in the Potter franchise now holds the record for biggest first day and biggest opening weekend (both domestically and across the world) and helped push the franchise past the $2 billion mark.

The eighth “Harry Potter” movie took in $92.1 million in North America on Friday and went on to earn a weekend total of $168.5 million, according to studio estimates. The new “Potter” film’s box-office gross topped those of previous record holders like “The Dark Knight” and “Spider-Man 3,” although it trailed them in attendance. “Deathly Hallows Part 2″ ranked sixth overall when it comes to number of tickets sold.

Over 3100 locations offered the film in 3-D (the largest 3-D rollout ever) but only 43 percent of audiences chose to see the film that way, offering another example of moviegoers’ 3-D fatigue.

Disney’s reboot of sorts of “Winnie the Pooh” didn’t stand a chance against the boy wizard and his pals, with the latest animated take on the classic character drumming up just $8 million in its debut.

“Transformers: Dark of the Moon” was a distant #2 at the box office during its third week of release, taking in $21.2 million for a $302.8 million total. Dark workplace comedy “Horrible Bosses” was #3 on the scorecard with $17.6 million for a $60 million total.

Kevin James’ “Zookeeper” took in $12.3 million for a $42.3 million total, which is far behind where the comedian’s “Paul Blart: Mallcop” was during a similar point in its theatrical release. “Cars 2″ rounded out the top five with $8.3 million. The computer-animated flick’s $165.3 million total and overall attendance record marks a 12-year low for the much celebrated Pixar Studios.

Writer/director Woody Allen has plenty to be happy about, however, as “Midnight in Paris” became his highest-grossing film over the weekend. The fantastical, well-reviewed movie has earned $41.8 million and ranks seventh among Allen’s films in terms of number of tickets sold.

This weekend will mark the arrival of two heavily promoted summer movies: highly anticipated “Captain America: The First Avenger,” which stars Chris Evans in the title role, and the Justin Timberlake/ Mila Kunis romantic comedy “Friends With Benefits.”

We hope Emma Watson has already digested her post-“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2″ brunch. Because now that she’s finished the project that virtually defined a decade of her life, the actress has plenty to look forward to.

The 21-year-old starlet did just a few non-”Potter” acting roles during her time with the franchise, only separating herself from Hermione long enough to star in the 2007 BBC film “Ballet Shoes” and lend her voice to 2008′s “Tales of Despereaux.” Now, she has wrapped her first two post-”Potter” films and is excited for people to see her outside of a “Harry Potter” capacity.

Up first is the Michelle Williams-starring adaptation of “My Week With Marilyn,” based on Laurence Olivier’s assistant’s account of spending time with Marilyn Monroe (Williams) while she was filming “The Prince and the Showgirl.” Watson plays a character named Lucy who goes on a few dates with leading man Eddie Redmayne. It’s a minor role for a small film (which is slated for release this November), but it’s garnering a lot of attention because of Watson’s involvement.

“I’ve seen a trailer for it. It looks pretty amazing,” Watson told MTV News at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards. “I mean, Michelle is an incredible actress, and Eddie Redmayne is also in it, so he did a great job.”

But her upcoming film that’s getting the most buzz is the Summit Entertainment adaptation of Stephen Chbosky’s coming-of-age novel, “The Perks of Being a Wallflower.” Watson plays Sam, the love interest of main character Charlie (played by Logan Lerman). It wrapped shooting several weeks ago, and Watson told us at the Movie Awards that the expectation was to turn it around and get it released quickly.

“It’s so funny because I never thought I’d make another sort of high school-esque movie, and here I am in this coming-of-age, American teen [movie],” she said. “But it’s very witty, and it’s very funny and it’s very moving, so I’m excited.”

When a reporter had the nerve to suggest such a thing to her face during a TV interview, Paris unsurprisingly decided to have a slight tantrum and stormed off camera.

The socialite was doing an interview in her home with ABC news at the time, when anchor Dan Harris asked:

?Do you worry at times that people who have followed in your footsteps like Kim Kardashian are over shadowing you?”

She replied ?No, not at all? to which he said:

“Do you worry about your moment being past?”

At which point whispers were exchanged with her publicist, she got up and then walked out. Not for long though, she returned ten minutes later and finished the interview explaining she?s about ?other things? now than just being a reality TV star.

Sure she is, the problem is ? no one actually cares about those things anymore.
